Bulaksumur Residence (Bsr) had been the first home I got ever since I came to Jogja. It was okay. Not exactly homey but hey what can you expect from a hostel, right? Nevertheless, the uncles or who we call "bapak" were nice and helpful. I never had problems with them when I was living there. I made really cool and helpful friends and love them :) . For UGM students (Malaysians or from other countries), normally Bsr is the place where you stay when you get here for girls. For guys, you'll be living in Cemara Residence. Living in Bsr was okay. Having friends around to hang out with and a very kind roomie, I was very thankful. Good thing about everyone staying at one place is that you don't have to travel, get a cab or ojek (motorbike taxi) just to get to another place just to see your friends and when you need their help. So save $$.
But here's the thing about living in Bsr, the contract was only for a year. The fees for the hostel is included in your tuition fees (for Malaysians studying in FKU, FKG, FKH and FF). So after your contract is done, you have to move out. And for my case, I decided to move out before I finish my contract. You may think I'm wasting my parents money by moving out so soon but yeah oh well.. Save your thoughts for yourself..haha
Anyway, here's the link if you're interested in knowing. Bulaksumur Residence
So I moved out to a new kost in Pogung Baru. Not that far from Bsr actually and it's only 7 minutes scooter ride to my faculty (FKG - Fakultas Kedokteran Gigi).
Main entrance of the hostel (Indonesians here call it 'kost' or 'kosan')
See the gate at the left hand side?
Now that is the gate for the garage (see the picture below)
So this is where I can park my scooter. I think that's safer. :) Which is why I like this kost.
The kost has 3 floors: ground floor (garage) and pantry, 1st floor is for the rooms and a shared living room and fridge, 2nd floor is where there're more rooms and a small spot to dry your clothes,in case you choose to wash your own laundry.
Now to the rooms....
Hehehehe
Very comfy bed I love :) (it was included, new some more :) )
From another angle, hmm, I need an organizer for my TKG stuff, they're in the green box.
Plasma TV is included. I tried to tell the bapak to take it out and give me discount for the monthly rent but yeah it was an attempt at subterfudge, sadly. :( He said it was included. So yeah whatever, just take it then.
Attached bathroom of course. :)
Smart system on top of that. :) Not exactly a necessity but well it's imcluded ...
And water dispensor (shared) and wifi too but no hot water. :(
The reason why I moved out of Bsr earlier than I was supposed to was because I felt like I needed my own space. Sharing a room with an awesome roomie I had was fine. It's just that I do miss having that freedom of just wearing less clothing or very little and not caring about whether people will see me or not. (Yeah i'm a liberal type. Yang penting comfortable and happy, ya uda)
Plus, I have 13 subjects for this semester to juggle, top up 4 labs that I have to work hard for every single week. And after my midterm finished, I'll be having my integrasi kuliah and it'll be even more hectic than now. I don't think finding a kost and moving out by then is convenient. And I love this kost, my current nest. :)
The other option if living in a kost is not your choice then it would be renting a house with few friends. We call that "kontrakan" here and usually you have to pay the rent yearly. For a house with 4 to 5 bedrooms it's around 40 million juta IDR and above per year depending on the area. :)
I wanted that too. Living in a house with friends would have been nice. It's cheaper than staying in the kost. But after thorough consideration, I decided that it may not be a wise choice for me.
Think of it this way, if you stay in a house, you have to maintain your own house. Clean your own house. So let's say you're willing to do that, well let's just hope your housemates are willing too. Next, pay your utility bills yourself. That is heading to the office to settle the bills. If you end up with friends who use more electricity and water but not willing to fork out extra money, then it'll be hard for you. Not to say I don't trust my friends. I think it's more to people being people. When it comes down to money, I've seen people doing the most cruel thing in the world.
Second, your safety. Living in your own house means no penjaga satpam (security guard). Granted, the area you're living in may have satpam but it may be as effective as having a satpam who stays in the kost and also takes care of the kost in terms of cleaning and maintaining the kost. And I just had a senior who has a friend who almost got stabbed while she was getting out of her kost. Thank God she was safe. Things like this happened, regardless of where you are in this world. I'm not telling you stuff like this to scare you, if you're a prospective student for UGM but I'm just gonna tell you the reality. :)
So really, be safe. And if you're interested in coming to UGM to further study. Please make sure that you know how to ride a bicycle at least and if you can, learn how to ride a bike or a scooter. It will be very useful. Don't be like me. Didn't learn how to drive because I always had people driving me around and my dad was super duper protective. :) I didn't even know how to cycle. *facepalm* And I came here and voolah... I had to learn how to ride a scooter and the traffic here is scary but you'll get used to it. :)
And oh, yeah I'm riding without a license. Haha.
I plan to get one soon. :)
(You must be thinking... ish ish ish budak ni bawa motor tak pakai lesen.. hahaha)
Last but not least, me, from my happy nest :)
See ya laters. I have to study for my next papers. :)
